The goal
is to obtain investment to build a prototype version of the BEE, either as an
evaporative cooler or for power generation from waste heat or passive solar
heating. Development will take place in two stages – further work using
modifications of the current experimental engine, and then the full-sized
prototype. Any decision on subsequent
commercialisation depends on outcomes of the prototype development. Current
technical work involves simulation of the performance of the BEE with passive
solar heating. The reference site for
this study is Wellington, an inland city in the state of New South Wales. The figure
below illustrates the general target market for the BEE in comparison to ORC
(Organic Rankine-Cycle) and conventional steam turbines. It is anticipated that the BEE will compete
on cost ($/installed kW) with small ORC systems. Stirling engines occupy a similar market
segment, although these are not seen as cost-competitive with ORC turbines or
the BEE. The low-power,
low-temperature region on the figure corresponds to the evaporative cooler
market for the BEE. |
